Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. The aunt she had was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay had a mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to use art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her youth, however she would spend every summer with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English as well as African American studies. When she was studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the waste of one of members of juries. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a young publicist for a studio. From this position she started her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
